Big Bass Bonanza: a fishing game that quietly hooked me

I didn't expect much from Big Bass Bonanza. Casual fishing games are a dime a dozen, and most of them are the same tap-and-wait loop dressed up differently. But this one got the feel right, and feel is everything in a game like this.

The reeling mechanic is where it earns its keep. When a fish bites, you tap in rhythm to keep the line taut, and bigger catches turn that into a genuine little struggle. It's the difference between a game that just runs an animation and one that makes you feel like you did something.

Visually it's all warm colors and cartoon charm. Nothing is trying to overwhelm you, which suits the short sessions it's built for. I opened it while waiting for a kettle to boil and ended up ignoring the tea.

My advice: play it in bursts and chase the bigger fish rather than grinding out little ones. Big Bass Bonanza is at its best as a palate cleanser between heavier games, and on that front it's a keeper.

It won't be everyone's thing — if you need constant action, look elsewhere. But as a relaxing, tactile little time-sink, it's one I've kept installed.
